Design Your Deck for Extended Lounging

April 25, 2013 - Updated: April 25, 2013

The concept of the backyard has changed

Backyards have changed considerably over the past few decades. No longer is it just a place to put the BBQ, some patio chairs, and a swing set for the kids. The reason for this change lends itself to the evolution of how it is now being used by Canadians.

Many Canadians now view their backyard as a space that they can use as a temporary getaway rather than just a place they revisit each week to cut the grass. Perhaps one of the reasons for the change in perspective is that homeowners now have more options to consider. There is no shortage of styles of patio furniture, BBQs, decks, and many other decorative pieces. Gone are the days of the 5-piece white plastic patio set.

People are spending more time outside

Canadians are also spending more time outside. With warmer weather year round in many areas across the country, people have more time to enjoy the outdoors. Add to this that many people are opting for things like staycations to save a few bucks. The way people utilize their backyard has come a long way.

There is no shortage of furniture options

Furniture manufacturers have responded to the increased demand for patio and backyard furniture and landscape products by creating extensive lines of furniture that is suited for an outdoor environment. The pieces are more sophisticated and are built with durable fabrics and materials, which can handle the Canadian weather.

Create a cottage environment at home

Why rent a cottage or cabin when you can recreate it on your deck in your backyard? From a financial perspective, you will be able to get a lot more out of a backyard or deck remodel then a week at the cottage. A cottage stay only lasts for a short period of time, where as a back yard remodel can be enjoyed over the long haul.

Design your deck for extended lounging

More attention is being paid to the landscape, patio, deck, and furniture that are present in backyards. So, if you want your deck to have a more welcoming and engaging atmosphere that you can enjoy for extended periods of time, here are some items to consider adding to the mix:

  • Fire pits and outdoor fireplaces: Perfect for those cool spring and fall evenings.

  • Heaters: A great addition for when the weather cools down.

  • Loungers: Forget the typical patio set. Think about adding lounge chairs, an outdoor sofa, or a swing seat for added comfort.

  • Extra lighting: Adding some extra lighting around your deck allows you to enjoy your surroundings when the sun goes down.

  • Kitchenette/bar: Adding a kitchenette or bar area will allow you to spend more time outside. Plus, you won’t have to keep running in and out of the house.

  • Hot tub: These are quickly becoming a staple on most decks.

  • TV/Stereo systems: Many people are adding electronics to their deck by adding outdoor speakers and even TVs.

So where did this change in approach come from?

This change in approach to how backyard and deck space is being utilized has changed as a result of many Canadians travelling to warmer climates and seeing how others utilize their outdoor space. Why not try to recreate a wonderful experience at a resort in your own backyard? This way you won’t have to worry about taking an expensive vacation or buying a cottage to get away. You can now do it in the comfort of your own backyard; and, for much cheaper in the long run.
