Have Heating Problems? Key Considerations For Buying A New Furnace

November 21, 2013 - Updated: November 21, 2013

Having an efficient and properly functioning furnace is absolutely necessary to heat your home. With increasing energy costs and considering that heating your home accounts for about half of your energy bill, homeowners cannot afford to have heating problems.

There are three main reasons people have heating problems:

  1. Their furnace is not working properly
  2. Their furnace has not been properly maintained
  3. Their furnace is old and needs to be replaced.

Before anyone decides to take part in furnace trouble shooting or replace their furnace, they need to take the time to educate themselves. You wouldn’t buy a car or a new television on a whim would you? The last thing you want is a new furnace and your home still has the same heating problems.

If you are in the market for a new furnace then you should definitely consider these options during the purchase process:

  • Green technologies: There are many new and very efficient green technologies that will not only generate your homes heat, but will also help to significantly reduce your heating bill.
  • Price point: Most consumers tend to make purchases based on price point. Your furnace is not something that you want to cheap out on or you could find yourself quickly doing some furnace trouble shooting. Many new efficient furnaces are more expensive, however, they will more than pay for themselves over time.
  • Which fuel to choose? When it comes time to purchase a new furnace, many consumers consider switching from an electric or oil based furnace to a gas furnace.  Switching to a new fuel for home heat is not always a wise move. Carefully consider your options and make the best decision for your home.
  • Hot Water Heating: Many people are now considering hot water heating to heat their home. With new solar water heating technologies, it may be worth a look.
  • Furnace Size: Having a furnace that is the proper size for your home ensures that you will have a constant temperature in your home.
  • Leave it to the professionals: If you want to avoid furnace trouble shooting and heating problems in the future, leave it to a professional to install and perform regular maintenance on your furnace. And, don’t forget to hold onto the proper documentation just in case you have issues with your homes heat.
