Home Design Trends: Black and White is Always a Good Choice

January 15, 2013 - Updated: January 15, 2013

When it comes to home design, it can be very easy for people to get out of control. With so many home magazines and television shows, homeowners have no shortage of motivation for ideas. The true difficulty is not in getting the ideas, but what ideas to use that will not only work well within your home, but also fit your personal design style.

When it comes to renovating both historical and modern homes, black and white is never out of style and is therefore, always a great simplistic design that can be incorporated in any home. However, even though a black and white design is both classic as well as modern, there are still a number of guidelines that homeowners should follow.

5 Tips for a black and white home design scheme

Here are some tips that homeowners should consider before they embark on their home design plans:

  1. Do something different: If you are going to use black and white, consider doing it in an unconventional way. Consider painting your baseboards and other trim black to give your home a completely different look and feel.
  2. Consider all facets: Before you crack the paint can make sure you consider all factors of the design. Think about things like the size of the room, spacing, as well as the height of the ceiling.
  3. Be smart: If you decide to bend the fashion rules, make sure that you do not go overboard. Get a second opinion if you are not sure about what elements you want to have black or white in your design scheme.
  4. Less is more: Adding some minor black accents or vice versa is ideal. Too much of one or the other could spoil the effect of the design’s effect.  You want to keep things balanced and have it properly scaled based on other elements such as furniture, carpets, and drapes.
  5. Do the whole house: If you decide to paint your baseboards black, you will find that, in most cases, it is best for you to follow the design throughout the entire house.

A black and white design is a great idea no matter what season or year we are in. However, just like other design schemes, homeowners should take the time to plan out their design to ensure it will work and is a design they will be happy with.
