Important Safety Update Related to Glass Balconies

April 19, 2012 - Updated: April 19, 2012

I would like to share with everyone a letter that I recently received from Concord Adex, regarding a safety update for their glass balconies.

Concord Adex

Dear Realtor,

As a responsible member of the community we take the safety of those who live and spend time at Concord CityPlace and Concord Park Place seriously. For this reason we want you to know the proactive measures that Concord Adex is taking to protect the safety of your clients and the residents of our buildings.

As we all know, last year brought forth industry-wide concerns around balconies, and in particular the safety of glass panels. Since all of this has happened, we have worked diligently to investigate all of our buildings for potentially defective panels. Where we found deficiencies, we fixed the problem immediately.

As an additional safeguard, we have made the decision to install protective mesh on balcony glass at Parade, Discovery I and Discovery II beginning April 9, 2012. Please note that this is a voluntary action that was not mandated by government and is being initiated for preventative purposes only. We have no conclusive evidence that suggests the glass at these buildings is deficient. However, given that construction on these projects falls within a period of time when others in our industry experienced similar issues and a common supplier is involved, we are not taking chances with people’s safety. The installation of protective mesh will prevent panels from falling should glass become compromised and shatter while at the same time allowing residents to enjoy their balcony. Until a permanent industry solution is identified, we believe this temporary measure is the safest and most comprehensive way of protecting residents and community members.

You should also be aware that Concord Adex is working with a leading glass expert, architects and structural engineers in an effort to understand the issues at play and move forward with a resolution that meets the highest safety standards.

For the last 15 years, we have been proud to build beautiful buildings and work with you in creating strong foundations where communities can thrive. As members of our realtor family, we value the work you do every day on our behalf. It’s because of our partnership with you that Concord CityPlace and Concord Park Place are now home to more than 16,000 Toronto residents.

We will keep you informed as new information emerges. Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns at
