It’s a new year, and with a new year comes the inevitable new year’s resolutions. Many people choose the new year to update and refresh their home decor. But those of us who have very little interior design experience may feel a bit lost when comparing our homes to others - inadequate, even experiencing serious decor envy. Instead, why not throw caution to the wind and make this the year you resolve to decorate for yourself, the way you want to?
Go your own way when it comes to interior design: with new home ideas that are yours this year. Here are some ways to make your interior decor your own, start expressing yourself and stop being bored in your own home:
Stop wasting money on updating whole rooms at once. If you already have high-end or even unique antique furniture in a room that you love, it’s likely this furniture will still “fit” in a room even after you paint or upgrade the room as a whole. You don’t have to buy new furniture to suit your new decor all at once - you can add little things over time, like art and accessories to bring the room together. Buying new everything just wastes money. If your room is already well-lit and in proportion, the room likely looks fine enough already and just needs some final touches.
Stop worrying about what everyone else thinks. If a neutral room doesn’t suit you - don’t have one. You are the one living in your living room, not your friends or extended family. If you like colour - use it. If you want bold and interesting art work, buy some. Even if you don’t “get” interior design, just go with what feels right and you should be happy with the result. Just make sure you are decorating for you, and no one else.
Don’t try and copy home decorating shows or interior decor magazines. Allow yourself to be inspired, sure - some of them are great and have lots of intriguing and easy ideas. But realize at the same time that most of those shows and magazines are in some ways a little ridiculous - most people would never be able to decorate with those kinds of budgets.
If you’re a homeowner, you have the luxury of experimenting with whatever kinds of interior design you like. And the internet is full of ideas you can let inspire you. You’ve probably seen something you loved somewhere, plenty of which was do-it-yourself: zebra-striped lampshades, shiny CDs glued across a wall or hand-made artwork. Let this be the year you resolve to finally try these things instead of worrying about what others will think. In the end, it’s your home. It should reflect your own tastes and home ideas that are yours - not what a magazine tells you. Let your creativity flow, and you might even find out you have an eye for designing your own space!
