Royal LePage Encourages A Community-Wide Response To Family Violence

April 22, 2016 - Updated: April 22, 2016
The National Garage Sale for Shelter brings new meaning and purpose to spring cleaning.
At Royal LePage, we know that a house is only truly a home if the people who live there feel safe, respected and loved. Sadly, that’s not the reality for the thousands of women and children who have experienced domestic violence.
The facts continue to be troubling. 67 per cent of Canadians personally know a woman who has been abused, and on any given day in Canada, 6,300 women and children will stay at a shelter to escape domestic violence. Unfortunately, violence often escalates when a woman leaves her partner. This causes communities to rely heavily on shelters to offer emotional support and options to women in crisis, as well as a safe haven and hope to those who take the courageous steps to leave.
Royal LePage agents are committed to being part of the solution. It’s why the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation – Canada’s largest foundation dedicated exclusively to supporting women’s shelters and ending domestic violence – hosts the annual National Garage Sale for Shelter. Now in its 8th year, this Mother’s Day weekend event brings local residents together with Royal LePage professionals to raise critical funds and awareness to help those seeking shelter and to break the cycle of family violence.
The National Garage Sale for Shelter has raised more than $2.25 million in support of women’s shelters across the country. The Royal LePage Shelter Foundation also funds educational initiatives aimed at helping teenagers develop healthy relationships and programs that assist women and children in rebuilding their lives after violence.
This spring, you are invited to join us in creating safer homes and healthier communities. Declutter and donate gently used items to a participating Royal LePage office and come to the National Garage Sale for Shelter location in your neighbourhood on Saturday, May 7. You’ll find great treasures while supporting your local women’s shelter.
